My Culinary Exploration of #Thai Food Fest at JW Mariott Sahar Mumbai

There is an amazing thing about food. It truly brings people from different walks of life together. It is a beautiful culinary journey, taken on the same table, sharing each other's world and often enjoying good food with good company. I call it "spice of life".

Spice of Life
My tryst with discovering and exploring "spice of life" has recently taken me to JW Mariott's JW Cafe, to a delightful and beautiful testing journey of "Thai Food". The popular restaurant is running "Thai Food Fest" in the city of Mumbai and invited few of us bloggers to come and relish from its marvel. The food festival is ably managed and hosted by a lovely [read warm] Chef Rungtiwa, who have churned up some beautiful recipe from her exotic Thai ingredients for this festival. And whoever thinks Thai is bland or purely coconut based, need to give this preconceived notion of theirs to rest and rush to JW Mariott's Thai Food Fest to discover and explore.

Thai Food Fest- The Decor
If you have visited JW Sahar Cafe, you would know about the good decor and lovely ambiance. For this ongoing festival, the lovely cafe had further been beautified and decorated with some Thai style boat, flower arrangements, status and ah those colorful umbrellas. Here's a dekko-

I was escorted inside the cafe by lovely Ankita Banerjee wherein a large and lovely table set for media awaited us. The place was abuzz with diners and guests, with food stalls neatly set up at eloquent corners, facilitating reach, visibility, and easy access. Since the Cafe was running both- usual banquet and That Food Festival simultaneously, it did give a thought to earmark the Thai Food Counters with colorful Thailand style Umbrellas. The facilitators at counters were gracious, hospitable and greeted every diner with folded hands. Sweet!

Thai Food Fest- Food
We started this culinary journey from the "fruit" counter that was set in form of a lovely boat, displaying the varieties of exotic fruit from Thailand [sans Durians] and some from India. I am not a very fruit person though but I love the Mangosteen and was quite delighted to found it there. Umm pleasure.

From the fruits counter, we moved to the salad counter where lovely Rungtiwa churned up a spicy Som Tum salad for us using raw papayas, Kaffir Lime [I just love it], chilly peppers and other veg condiments. The salad was top of town and in spite of being little, it appeased my taste buds and became a favorite.

Post Salad we moved to the soup section, wherein I selected a spicy version of Tom Yum soup over clear soup. The soup was hot and laden with fresh condiments including glass noodles and spinach noodles. Like Salad, it too did not turn us down and was quite palatable.

You, me and Khao Suey
Though it has an origin from Burma, Khao Suey do reflect in Thai food at times. Being a Khao Suey fan, I could not wait to try it. So as soon as I finished my soup, I headed to counter where Khao Suey was been made. I took my bowlful and must say it was worth every spoon and, was on the best Khao Suey that I had in the city. The crunchiness, the taste, the adequate mixture of ingredients in the right amount and the well-cooked broth, all were made to perfection [as far I recall over other experiences recently]

During the course, we also tried some Satay [pineapple] before moving to the main course wherein I had some noodles and stir-fried vegetables. The overall taste of the main course was mild and came with enough spicy pastes to up the hotness if required.

Here are few pictures-

We ended the dinner with desserts that left a little more to be desired though. Nevertheless, the overall fare was good.

Here's a snapshot of me with my blogger buddies at the Food Fest.

Haute Kutir Verdict: The Thai Food Fest at JW Sahar is indeed a good collaboration and culmination of flavors from the beautiful eastern country of Thailand, brought in Mumbai, on your food plate. The ambiance was quite pleasant and done in good taste. The food was palatable, rich in flavors and absolute appetizing. I loved the spicy flavor and overall concept that was neatly and skillfully designed and laid out. The Food festival is packed and running till August 1st week. The charges may be around Rs 1600 incl taxes [approx] per pax, while the charges for Sunday brunch may vary.

If you like Thai Food or want to try some of it, do go ahead and give your taste buds an experience of JW hospitality. If you ask me for choices, I loved the salad, the soup, and the Khao Suey. I did not like the beverages that were served and the Dessert much and think there is room for some improvement. The Mangosteen did pull me to the fest but unfortunately, they ran out of stock, making me plan a re-visit.

Do remember that Thai food is not the same as Chinese, though they may be bordering on few ingredients and taste, they are indeed worthy for your sumptuous dinner this Monsoon.

Do I visit again? Yes

Do I recommend my readers to try the Thai Food Festival at JW Sahar? Indeed!

My rating: 4/5

Haute Kutir Trivia:  Do you know, the art of "vegetable carving" is said to have originated in the Sukhothai Kingdom, nearly 700 years ago?

Before I leave, here's the group picture clicked by another amazing chef-  Chef Danish who had cooked us a good Sunday brunch at the sister concern last year. Yes, you can add him to my list of reasons to visit the JW Cafe again, as well.

Ah! Now that's me with the Chef Rungtiwa, in all my ethnic chic glories. Yeah, what better way to celebrate a food festival in an ethnic, traditional dress? Right!

Nexg TV - Nonstop Entertainment on Mobile

Oops! It's about to be eight o' clock in the evening and guess what, I am already late for my favorite show. It is not something new that is happening today, but it had been happening to me almost every single day. I miss out on several of my favorite shows on a regular basis due to late working hours and work-home distance. The re-runs are pretty late in the night and I can't afford to wait thus long. Wish there was something in near proximity, available whenever I wanted at my fingertips!
Another problem with TV is - intruding advertisements and mass market content. I hate changing channels and have been looking for a single screen-single medium ‘Entertainment Destination’, where I can easily watch breaking news, the latest movies, trending videos, funny episodes and so much more.

I am ok for a mobile app provided-
1) It is reliable
2) Works on different data Speed
3) Presents Exclusive Content
4) Can be used in multiple screens like Mobile, IPTV, and even  PC.

I guess I need something like Nexg TV.

Don’t know what is nexGTv? Well for the un-initiated, it is an award-winning app which offers wholesome entertainment across multi-screen devices.
How Does it work?
Simply visit their website and register using your phone number. The registration is secured via OTP and once you have registered as a user, you can log in and access the content library.
It has been ranked amongst the Top 10 apps in this category across app stores, and has also been chosen as the ‘The Best Digital Experience’ at the prestigious world communication Awards 2014.  Some salient features of this app that make it interesting for Team Haute Kutir are as following-
1) Works across screens
2) Compatible with most smartphone networks including Android, Blackberry, iOS, Symbian and Tizen, irrespective of bandwidth.
3) The app runs across different data networks including 2G, EdGE, 3G, 4G and WiFi networks
4) Streams over 155 live TV channels with TV shows, movies and videos
5) A unique feature of ‘Pause’ and ‘Resume’ for ease of watching
Well, that is quite simple and cool. Isn't it? Next, when you are stuck in traffic or are on a boring journey, you just know what to do.
Idiot Box, here you are, on my Smartphone...

Make A Wish with Flipkart because #AbHarWishHogiPoori

Click and Crave in Rain

Hoorah! It's raining in Mumbai. And the best way to enjoy rains in Mumbai, is to sit by your window pane, watch the pitter-patter of rain fall, leaning against your window, occasionally sprinkling on your face, touching your soul.

Rainfall tunes thousand of emotions in your heart and music in your ears. The tintinabulation is lyrical and musical, leaving melodies in your heart, making you crave, click and off course cook. Yeah, it is not just the melodies that rain transpires in you, it also kindles your appetite and make you crave for some hot, fried snacks like Pakodas [Fritters], Chips, Hot Halwa [pudding] with a cup of Indian Tea.

Hot, fried snacks yes. Read Hot, fried and unhealthy! The more unhealthy a snack is, more lucrative it sounds. Read Samosas, Bread pakodas and Onion rings. Yumm, my mouth is filled with water and crave for some fresh baked potato filled Samosas [a deep fried Indian Savory]. But unhealthy it is, it cannot be consumed on daily basis.

Food and Childhood- Crave and Cook
Me and my father loved eating fried food, especially when it rains. Back in school, we would often associate rains with bowl full of fried fritters and would often cajole my mother to cook it for us. Whenever she refused, we would jump in the kitchen, wear our chef apron and cook up the storm.

I so much wish to relive the same moment but unfortunately, my father is now a diabetic patient and has been restricted from eating fried food in general. However, the crave for oily, fried food is still the same in my father and me. I, in spite of my sudden weight mis-management [yes I have gained so much additional kilos in last few years due to my "unhealthy" eating habits], I still love fast food esp the fried variety a lot.

The unhealthy quotient is the villain who comes between our food love and lifestyle. Wish there is something I can do about making "unhealthy food, healthier yet tastier option".

#AbHarWishHogiPoori with Flipkart "Wish-ious" cycle
When Rains kiss the earth, they make it look green and serene. Indeed that is what made Sarang to buy Instamax camera from Flipkart.   Well I would have loved to do a photo-walk in rain like good old days. This time, I would also love to click food pictures [may be covering a blog story on different healthy snacks during rain]. So why not acquiring a device that incorporates both- Snacks for monsoon and healthy eating for monsoon.

The "wishious" cycle continued and hence "Air fryer" was innovated. The product is known to cook food esp fast food using a healthier "hot air" technology that gives the same taste as deep frying would give, without actually frying it deep in oil. Here's a dekko-

Isn't it amazing? Well now me and my father can indeed enjoy the rains with our junk food-cook in healthy manner. So Philips Air fryer it is. I have checked different food fryer options in Flipkart and post the comparison, I added it to my "wishlist".

If you are thinking, that I am in Mumbai and my father is in other city, how would I get the nostalgic taste delivered? Well Flipkart hai na :)

Dining Etiquette and Brunch with Femina Believe at Hakassan Mumbai

Holla! New women. Know how to carry yourself well. How to wear that sash and curl your tongue to separate Orchids from Lemongrass. Learn to wear your lipstick well and rim your peeps with kohl. Time is changing, and as we get more contemporary, we need to muster our feminine self and master the art of self-grooming.
Etiquette is all human social behavior. If you're a hermit on a mountain, you don't have to worry about etiquette; if somebody comes up the mountain, then you've got a problem. It matters because we want to live in reasonably harmonious communities.

Judith Martin

Human is a social animal and since we do not live in seclusion, nor are we hopeless cynics, we need a standard principle to follow especially while moving in social circus oops circuits. I have often seen myself getting irritated at a lot of social dine outs wherein I see people wearing high-end labels but eating their food as grossly as I can not imagine. Baring a few formal dine outs, I have barely seen people respecting the art of culinary sciences or cohabitation of the same dining table.

During my MBA, I have taught myself etiquette dos and don't of different countries and baring occasional exceptions, have followed them mostly. So when Femina invited me to attend a "Femina Believe workshop on Dining Etiquette", I could not refuse the invitation to have brunch with my fellow bloggers and revise my knowledge of dining etiquette at the lovely premise of Hakassan, Mumbai.

If Chopsticks baffle you..... Brunch with Femina Believe
Femina has become a quintessential synonym with women and all thing feminine and pretty. Everything attached to them is beautiful, sassy and elegant. So was this event.

The headline of the invite arrested my attention. I have tried mastering the art of using chopsticks very unsuccessfully in past and wanted to give it another try.

About Femina Believe

Femina Believe is a learning academy that conducts workshops in make-up, personality development, communication skills, and dining etiquette.

Dining Etiquette with Greeshma Thampi at Hakkasan, Bandra
We were greeted with a bubbly Sangria at the beautiful Hakkasan that was bathed in dim lights and a pleasant ambiance. The tables were set for the bloggers with cutlery and chopsticks in place. Popular Image consultant Greeshma Thampi was the person in charge of the workshop. She took us through a very engaged and interesting workshop that lasted before we could actually realize that we were hungry.

Here are the details of the event in pictures-

The tables were set at the lovely Hakkasan

Our Lovely facilitator- Greeshama who took everyone through Do's and Don'ts of fine dining with tips and tricks-

That's me with Greeshma and my blogger friend - Prerna, brushing our hands on "art of using a chopstick". You know the expertise lays in patience, persistence, and practice when it comes to chopsticks as well? :)

Practice my Dear Watson
Theory theory everywhere
takes the little Jim- nowhere.
Well, he ends up being Jack of all Trade,
So let's practice to master our grade

So to break the myth of learning without leading, we had a small yet fun-filled competition wherein we were given peanuts which we have to pick using our chopsticks and drop in the bowl. Obviously, the highest score wins.

But before that, here's how we practiced on our chopsticks skill-

Well, if you were following me on Instagram, you would have got the update long before, you see.

Oh, we? Nah, we couldn't hit the bowl's eyes with peanut escorted from chopsticks. So we have to settle down for lunch, the scrumptious Asian spread that oozed with taste and great presentation. Here's the dekko at the food served.

And the show stopper was this yummy rice dessert. The detailed review will come soon on this blog

When Chopsticks baffle you....practice
The newfound chopstick enthusiast in us, not to be laid behind, took the passion, a plunge further and finished the luncheon with the glorious chopstick that soon started befriending the learners

So before we leave, here's a group picture to keep the memoirs of a day well spent and a brunch, well cherished

And Finally, here's me-

How to get a 5 minutes de-tan with Spinz Sun Tan Remover

The sun does lot of damage to your skin. You may not wish to sunbathe but the strong and harmful UV rays, makes their way to your skin, especially your face and arms. You can cover your arms but covering your face becomes difficult and you end up having free "sun facials" that costs you your complexion.

In such scenario, how will you #BanTheTan?
Well, a lot of our readers have mailed us regarding doing a feature on best sunscreen with above SPF 50. Honestly, I am not a supporter of sunscreen, nor endorse the idea of using any sunscreen with SPF higher than 20. { this is my personal view, you can check with your dermatologist}. However, "sunscreen" as solution is quite popular in the minds of our respondents, when we asked them about their views on "dealing with sun-tan". A majority of them replied- using sunscreen with high SPF.

While the use of sunscreen and SPF grade is still debatable, sunscreen as a solution is known to be proactive. What if your skin is sunscreen sensitive [read allergic] like mine?
or
what if you still develop a tan in spite of using a sun screen?

#SpinzBanTheTan
While there are lot of home made remedies, a lot of us find them messy and time consuming affair. Alternatively, lets look at a remedy that is-

1) Quick and Handy
2) Easy
3) Cost Effective
4) Easily available
5) Dermatological test
6) Gives Instant effect
7) From the house of Cavin care

Cavin care, a well known FMCG brand has recently launched- No Bleach, wash off cream which claims to give you Salon like Fairness in just 5 minutes-

Spinz Sun-Tan Remover
Spinz STR is a reactive approach to deal with unwanted sun tan on your facial skin. It is known to be suitable for all skin type, is dermatological tested and works within 5 minutes [as per brand claims].

It is based on a concept in use test among 200 volunteers conducted by an external research agency in Chennai and Delhi upon single application for just 5 minutes.

Haute Kutir Reviews Spinz STR
Spinz is a popular name in Deodorant category. When I was approached to try this brand, I was intrigued by the thought. Having it coming from Cavin Care umbrella, I gave my nod to try. The first thing I checked was- presence of SPF. Thankfully, it being the reactive [post sun tan] solution, SPF need not be there and that made a good difference for me.

1) No SPF!

The cream came in a white and violet labelled tube which reminded me of packaging of another product- Boro Plus. However, I liked the idea that brand did not spent much on "packaging" but the R&D and solution, worked out for me.

Simple Packaging, No foo-fraw!

While the product came, I was in middle of shifting my house and attending an interview call. Given the messy affair and time crisis, I could not manage to visit a salon or get into a home facial regime. The product concept ticked with me and after a small allergy test, I tried it out. My first reactions while applying were-

It is appropriately thick and need no mixing agent- can be applied directly to face from tube
It was mild fragrant, the fragrance reminded me of an old Emami Cold cream that used to come some decades ago in white plastic can.
It is non -allergic

I do not like bleaching my face but had to apply on insistence of my salon artist. However, I do believe in giving 1 to 1.5 months time gap between bleaches for minimum. Though remembering dates is not easy for me. So the "no bleach" came in handy for me. It was easy to apply, cause no itching and was easy to wash off.

Easy to apply!

In three simple steps wherein-
Step 1- Take 9 gm or two finger length of the cream and apply all over your face
Step 2- Apply well, forming a thick layer on your skin and keep it on for 5 minutes
Step 3- Wash off with water

And hey lo! I was done. Suddenly I felt happy with this 5 minute grooming and in spite of my job interview getting cancelled, I wore the effects for the dinner with hubby.

Did he noticed? Indeed.

Post wash: The cream was easy to wash off and left a tightening feeling post wash.

Will I use it again? Yes!

Haute Kutir Verdict- At rs 10 for a single use sachets, Rs 49 for 25 gm Tube, the product is indeed worthy of trial. Like in my precious post, I did mention that beauty need not come with price tag.  You are your best audience. Given that product is suitable for all skin types and can be bought in a sachet for allergy test as well, you can go ahead and try it. And hey do share your feedback with us here. We can take your feedback directly to the brand team. And you never know, the best feedback can win a Flipkart / Snapdeal voucher from Team Haute Kutir.

So what are you waiting for? Comment to day to win.

And yes, do not forget to follow us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook for quick updates.

Till then,
Be beautiful, Inside Out!
